Ms Justice O'Malley gives keynote address at DCU Ethics & Privacy symposium

On 22 January, Ms Justice O’Malley delivered a keynote address at an international symposium in Dublin City University.

The symposium, entitled The Gavel and the Algorithm: The Role of the Courts in a Data-Driven World, explored the critical challenges and opportunities that data-driven technologies present for judicial systems globally. The keynote dialogue was introduced by Flávio Helmold Macieira, Ambassador of Brazil to Ireland, and featured Ms. Justice O’Malley alongside Mr. Justice Gilmar Ferreira Mendes of the Brazilian Supreme Court.

Held as part of DCU Ethics & Privacy Week, this two-day event was organised by the Dublin European Law Institute, in partnership with the EMILDAI programme. Due to the international nature of this event, attendees posed a range of insightful and challenging questions, spanning topics from the impact of technology on common and civil law systems to the integration of AI within the Brazilian judiciary and its potential use in the Irish courts.
