About This Office
This office administers the Court Areas of Tuam, Athenry & Gort. All garda criminal matters - charge sheets & summonses - are taken on each Monday and on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Wednesday at 10.30 a.m. All non-garda prosecutions, i.e. state solicitors, local authority prosecutions, private prosecutions etc. and all applications (licensing etc.) are taken on the 1st Tuesday of each month only. Family law cases are heard on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. The only exception to the above is the annual licensing court in September which per the rules has to be the last court in the month. The August courts are on each Tuesday in August. Location of courthouse. Galway City - the courthouse is located five minutes walk from the city centre. From the railway/bus station cross Eyre Square, turn right at the corner of Brown Thomas department store and proceed up Eglinton St. The courthouse is located opposite the Town Hall Theatre and next to the Salmon Weir Bridge and Galway Cathedral. Parking is available at the Cathedral carpark and at the Dyke Road carpark which is situated off the Headford Road, a short walk from the courthouse. There are also smaller carparks at Newtownsmyth and Market Street. There are also five multi-storey carparks around the centre of the city.
Local Facilities
The city is well served by bus routes from all over Ireland, both by Bus Éireann and private coach operators and there is also a frequent bus service to all parts of Galway city. Five trains arrive in and out of Galway daily on the Dublin / Galway route. Taxis are available at the taxi rank at Eyre Square. For meals and refreshments there are several coffee shops and pubs in the vicinity of the courthouse. Pub food (carvery) from 12.30 to 3.00 p.m. daily. Athenry (District No. 12) is located 15 miles east of the city. Gort (District No. 12) is located 24 miles south of the city on the Galway to Limerick road. The courthouse is located in the town square. Tuam (District No. 4) is located 22 miles North East of Galway on the Sligo / Castlebar road.
